One Silver Lining
One Silver Lining is a non profit organization that aims to promote positive body image and self esteem among youth while raising awareness about the media’s impact on beauty standards. One Silver Lining was created in March of 2013 by youth founder Bianca Pisciola. The inspiration for the organization came from Bianca’s personal struggle with her body image and self esteem. According to the Canadian Women’s Foundation, over 50% grade 6 girls have reported going on a diet, and 9 out of 10 reported feeling pressure from the media to stay thin. These are pressures that impact boys and girls alike, and the goal of One Silver Lining is to eliminate the stress that the media places on young people.
What we’ve accomplished so far
In the last year, One Silver Lining has gained prevalence within the GTA by hosting campaigns and events such as the Bea(u)tiful Benefit Concert, which featured over 30 youth performers and raised money for the National Eating Disorder Information Centre. One Silver Lining also spearheaded the (Be)lieve in (You)rself campaign, a viral photo campaign that aimed to promote positive body image online. The campaign consisted of photos of youth holding up inspirational phrases and sharing those photos throughout several social media platforms. One Silver Lining has conducted workshops at conferences and in elementary schools and high schools across York Region. So far, we have worked with over 1,000 teens and preteens and have conducted workshops on a number of topics, such as self esteem building, body image and bullying. These OSL workshops have been incredibly well received among staff and students alike, with comments such as “Excellent work and such important messages being shared! You are great role models for the students and exhibit wonderful leadership skills!” (Catherine Donovan, Vice Principal St. Justin Martyr Elementary School).
